Social Issue Clock

Social Issue Clock

During our senior year, we design a clock based on a social issue. My social issue was bullying. Some think being bullied is a right of passage. A bullying episode lasts an average of 37 seconds and teachers notice or intervenes in only 1 in 25 of those incidents. One in three children report having been bullied at some point in their lives. It is reported that 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Tactics of harassment, persecution, oppression, and strong-arming leave the bullied individual feeling isolated. The goal was to design a clock that showed how bullying affects children. I chose birch wood as my clock base and used a laser cutter machine to burn in words that describe what bullies do to those they bully. I also wanted to show the effects of being bullied. The victim feels isolated just as the words are isolated from the base. The burn effect from the laser printer showed how the things bullies do leave a lasting impression on the victim.
